The war monument and the peace tree in the ‘Dorpsstraat’ in Zulte/Machelen remembers the casualties and civilians who died in World War I and World War II. The sculptor is Antoon Van Parys who, in opposition to the orther artists, didn’t praise the bravery of the fallen. He showed the destruction, the sorrow and the suffering of war in a serene and almost mystical way. He didn’t made war monuments, he made monuments for peace.
