In the Emiel Clauslaan, in the borough Astene, you’ll discover Villa Zonneschijn (sunshine). This villa, dating from the beginning of the 19th century, was adapted to the famed painter Emile Claus, who lived and worked there. He had a lovely view over his source of inspiration, the Lys, from the backside of his workplace. On the opposite side the trees of the Maaigemdijk and the forest of Ooidonk made up the skyline. Claus has been reburied in his backyard under a marble statue, made by George Minne.
