Procession of the Holy Blood Meigem

On the first Sunday of July, after the high mass of 9 o’clock, the Procession of the Holy Blood passes through the streets of Meigem, also known as “the bloody road”. The Procession of the Holy Blood is a well-known concept in Deinze. It has become an indispensable immaterial heritage in the region and far beyond. The suffering of Christ is central to this. More than 550 performers give shape to it. In addition to many current residents, every year many former fellow villagers and people from the surrounding area join in. The procession is part of the “Octave of the Holy Blood”. For 8 days Meigem becomes a centre of devotion. The procession in Meigem maintains the link with society by involving the village community and by adapting to the ever changing social circumstances.
